Vienna – Bratislava Day Trip and Why You Should Do It!

Let me tell you why you should be a Bratislover (…I’ll see myself out). If you’re going to the Austria’s pearl and you have more than 5 days there, I’d strongly suggest you consider a Vienna – Bratislava day trip. The Slovakian capital is otherwise one of those cities that you’re likely to miss when planning a Europe trip and that would be a shame. Visiting Vienna could be the perfect opportunity to take the bus, head east for about an hour and spend the day in beautiful Bratislava. Here is why:

It’s only an hour/hour and a half bus ride away

There are no two capitals in Europe which are closer together than Vienna and Bratislava, which makes for an even more compelling argument to buy your bus ticket. I usually buy my tickets from Slovak Lines https://www.slovaklines.sk/main-page.html or FlixBus https://www.flixbus.com/?_ga=2.20620216.1801171029.1517231023-391929184.1517231023 . It’s easy, cheap and fast, what more do you want?

Because Bratislava is perfect for a day trip

The beauty of it is that Bratislava is one of those cities which are PERFECT for a day trip. The old centre is so small that you can easily see everything by foot and not even get tired. If you can be there at around 10am you can start with walking up to the Bratislava Castle and observing the historical centre from there. Then climb down and just aimlessly walk around the little cobblestone alleyways – there’s something interesting to see on every corner! You’ll have the time to visit a few museums if you like, sit down for a tasty lunch at one of Bratislava’s utterly charming restaurants, go walk some more and even have time to drink a beer before heading back to the bus station.

Quick vegan travel tip: I personally liked this restaurant (http://www.greenbuddha.sk/kontakt/) last time I was in the city (although keep in mind the food there is VERY hot…so if you’re not into that you might want to choose a different place )

Bratislava rooftop view

Fantastic rooftop views

If you know me at all you know rooftop views are my specialty. I’m obsessed with them and I look for them everywhere. And if you’re anything like me, this alone would be enough to make you book your ticket to Bratislava. You’re not quite convinced? Just have a look:

It’ll cost you almost nothing

Well I mean if you fly there on a jet and you book the Bratislava castle for a private tour it might cost you more than a normal day in Vienna, but if you take the bus, have a normal meal there, drink a coffee and a beer and visit a few museums you’ll absolutely spent less money than you would for the same things in Vienna.

Convinced yet? Have you already made a Vienna – Bratislava day trip?
